From 10 to 25 September 2022, the very best men’s and women’s handball teams from across Asia will compete at the 19th edition of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China – and the host nation last week revealed the mascots which fans and athletes are set to see with everything connected to the Games.

After the inaugural edition of the Asian Games back in India in 1951, the continental multi-sport event has grown considerably and now includes 45 Asian countries competing across 42 sports.

The 2022 mascot announcement followed the reveal of the 2026 Asian Games logo last week in Tokyo, Japan. The 20th edition of the continental event will take place in Aichi-Nagoya from 19 September to 4 October 2026.

Where will the Games take place?

The XIX Asiad is planned to take place in Hangzhou, China. Hangzhou is a breathtakingly beautiful city as well as the capital of the Zhejiang province in East China.

When will the 19th Edition of Games be held?

The XIX edition of the Asian Games will be held between September 10 and September 25, 2022. The opening ceremony will be held at Hangzhou Sports Park Stadium.

First Edition

Taking place every four years, the Games featured handball for the first time in New Delhi, India at the 1982 edition, with China winning the men’s competition. A women’s competition was added eight years later, in 1990, which was won by Republic of Korea.

New events

Chess has been officially included in the Sports Programme of the Games.Cricket, too is all set to make a return to Asian Games in the 2022 edition.

New teams

The Games will also include athletes from Oceania for the first time after the approval from Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to compete in sports which qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics through Asia, including volleyball, beach volleyball, basketball, football and fencing.


The official motto of the 2022 Asian Games: “Heart to Heart, @Future” was unveiled at the Tennis Centre of the Olympic and International Expo Park – nicknamed Little Lotus on 15 December 2019.


Congcong, Lianlian, and Chenchen, known collectively as the smart triplets “Memories of Jiangnan” were unveiled online on April 3, 2020 as the official mascots of the Games, a male robotic superheroes that originated the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, the West Lake, and the Grand Canal.


44 venues will be used during the Games, which 30 venues are already existing in the city, 10 are under construction and another 4 venues are in the planning stage.

Total Games

The Games would feature 37 sports, including the 28 permanent Olympic sports to be contested at the 2024 Summer Olympics as well as events in other non-Olympic sports.3 sports were added on 12 September 2019, making the total increased to 40 sports.
