No. 7 Maryland imposed its will on the California Golden Bears and won by a score of 4-0 Sunday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
Maryland (4-1) quickly gained control of the momentum and started buzzing around the Cal goalkeeper. A penalty corner from Bibi Donraadt to Riley Donnelly sparked a melee in front of the net where Belle Bressler pounced on the ball and put it in the back of the net for a 1-0 Terps lead. Maryland continued to put it on the Cal goalie to the tune of eight shots with six of them coming on goal.
The Terps entered the second half up 1-0 but only needed two minutes to add to it. Kyler Greenwalt took a rebound from a Julianna Tornetta shot and planted it behind the goalie to give Maryland a 2-0 lead. Anna Castaldo added another for the Terps to make it 3-0 and that was more than enough for Missy Meharg’s squad.
Stout defense by the trio of Donnelly, Rayne Wright and Maura Verleg made life incredibly difficult for the Golden Bears (3-2) as they could only get one shot onto Maryland goalie Noelle Frost. Tornetta put the exclamation point on the game as she took a pass from Castaldo and scored to make it 4-0 in the waning minutes of the game.
Missy Meharg’s Take
“To have back-to-back games where you’re taking 23, 24 shots and to find a way to be disciplined and find the goal cage and get great, great goals is promising. We always say that defense wins championships and with three straight shutouts, that’s the name of the game. I applaud Noelle Frost and our deep defense. Maura Verleg at center back has taken her play to a whole new level since she’s been here.”
