Selangor strengthened its position as the leader of Group B after recording a comfortable 4-0 victory over Kedah in the third day of the TNB Tun Abdul Razak Cup (Women) 2021 Championship at the Bukit Jalil National Hockey Stadium this morning.
The victory put Selangor at the top with 6 points followed by Kedah, who had previously beaten Perak 4-1, to occupy second place after two matches.
In another match of the same Group, Perak and PDRM failed to record their first victory after being tied 1-1. PDRM was first in front through Norhafizah Razali (6th minute) before Nur Zuha Qistina Ridzuan equalized for Perak in the 52nd minute.
Both Perak and PDRM have no choice but to win the last match of the Group stage to brighten the chances for the next round.
Nurul Safiqah Mat Isa contributed two goals for Selangor in two minutes (39th and 41st) in the third quarter of the game, which was also the fourth personal goal for the player so far.
Only five minutes into the match, Nur Idrina Asnida Mohd Yusmi put Selangor in front before Nur Insyirah Effarizal strengthened the team’s position through a field goal in the 29th minute.
Selangor is expected to have no problem meeting Perak in the last match of the Group stage this Sunday while Kedah will have to win when they meet PDRM to qualify for the next round.
“I am satisfied with the performance of the players even though it started a bit slow, probably due to the time of the match being too early. However, the players remained focused and managed to dominate the game in the third and fourth quarters, “said Selangor coach, Ikmal Abdul Jabar.
Meanwhile, Penang maintained an unbeaten record after a big 6-1 win over Terengganu to lead Group C with 6 full points.
However, Penang had to wait until the second quarter before conceding Terengganu’s goal as a result of Siti Nur Atika Shaikh Maznan’s field goal in the 19th minute.
Nurmaizatul Hanim Syafi Shiek Fuad emerged as one of the top scorers of the tournament so far when he recorded a hat-trick (43rd, 53rd and 54th minutes) to help Penang win big. Goals by Allisya Yushira Badri (26th minute) and Nuraida Zulaikha Pauzi completed the victory for the Pulau Mutiara squad.
“Overall, we played well as a team and congratulations to our young players who are not afraid and do not rely too much on four senior players to compete with opponents.
“But, we need to be more focused and sharp for the next match,” said Penang team captain Putri Nurbatrisya Nornawawi.
Terengganu remains in second position but needs to ensure victory over Kuala Lumpur after this if they want to qualify for the next round.
In another match, Kuala Lumpur , coached by A. Kannagi, failed to take the opportunity to strengthen their group position when they recorded a 1-1 draw with Sarawak.
Sarawak took the lead through Elizabeth Epui son of Martin in the 34th minute before Nurazlin Sumantri drew the score through a penalty stroke in the 41st minute.
The failure to complete several chances in front of goal in today’s action saw Kuala Lumpur have no choice but to win over Terengganu in next Monday’s action if they want to go to the next round.
