The South African men and women’s hockey sides triumphed at the African Hockey Road to Tokyo tournament to secure a spot at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
South Africa men’s hockey team eased past Egypt 3-2 to take gold at the Stellenbosch turf in Capetown in South Africa, while the South African women beat Ghana 6-0 in their final group match to finish top of the standings.
The hosts were unbeaten coming into the final game of the tournament.
It is important to note that the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc), however, do not allow continental qualification. Both teams missed the previous Games in Rio 2016 due to the same policy.
But the men’s team’s chances of making the South African team for the Tokyo Games has been given a shot in the arm after they finished second at the Hockey Series Finals in India which was part of the national federation’s suggested criteria.
The women, in turn, missed out in the finals of their tournaments which was held in Valencia.
If South Africa receives clearance, they will compete at Toyko 2020, joining Japan who have automatically qualified as hosts, as well as Argentina, who qualified earlier in the month after clinching the “Gold” at the Pan American Games 2019.
