The Belgium Red Lions will take on South Africa in their last group match at the Odisha Mens Hockey World Cup today. Just like India, the Belgian men count 4 points in group C, but because their goal difference (+5 against +1) is less good compared to the host country they are in second place.

The group winner pushes straight to the quarter finals, the numbers two and three play barrage matches for a spot in the last eight.

Change in Squad

The Belgian team have had some changes in their squad since their first two games. There have been two replacements. The replacements were made after Belgium sought approval from the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

22-year old, Antoine Kina, has come in as a replacement player for Emmanuel Stockbroek, who fell victim of a hamstring tear in the last minutes of the match against India. While Augustin Meurmans has come in as a replacement for John John Dohmen, who had to withdraw from the tournament after being contracted with bronchitis.

The 21-year-old midfielder from Brussels was clearly not expecting to take on John-John Dohmen’s place. Augustin says he is more than excited to play his first World Cup, but he also admits to feeling a bit nervous.

“I have been trained under Tom Boon since I was very young. It’s such a pride to be part of the Red Lions today. I hope i can honour it. I trained really hard for this day. I am therefore looking forward to the start of this World Cup.” he said.

Kina arrived in India on Monday while Meurmans landed on Friday and, although on the bench, they will not play against South Africa today.
