The four Scottish teams finished their Futures Cup campaign strongly at Oakland’s College in St Albans.
A mixed day on Friday had left the teams in a variety of play off matches on the final day. Three out of four teams tasted victory on the final day to enhance their finishing places. However it was heartache for the Emerging Under 15/16 Girls who lost a tightly contested final to the Saxon Tigers 2-0. A well earned silver medal was the consolation for an excellent week’s work.
Both the Emerging Boys Under 15/16 and Aspiring Girls Under 17’s featured in 3rd/4th play off matches. The boys scored a last minute winner through Murray Griffiths to beat the Pennine Pumas 3-2, after goals from Jack Adams and Sam Hunt had twice given the Scots the lead. The girls won a tight encounter with the Pumas 1-0, with an Olivia Henderson strike early in the third quarter being the difference between the teams.
Earlier in the day the Aspiring Boys Under 17 squad finished their tournament on a high with a comprehensive 5-1 win over the Celtic Jaguars in their 5th/6th play off match. A double from Xavax Cordero book-ended goals from Pete Caughey, Louis Roddy and Jamie Croll, as the Cougars dominated.
The squads travelled the long road home knowing the Futures Cup had delivered an outstanding development experience for all Scotland’s pathway athletes and coaches. Many thanks to England Hockey for organising the event for the benefit of all young athletes across the GB system.
