Chairman of the National Team Management Committee, Hockey Confederation of Malaysia (MHC), Dato ‘Najmi Razak, today through a press conference at MHC announced the list of 20 players of the National Women’s Special Project Squad who will take on the challenge at the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy, Donghae , South Korea, 2021.

The tournament, which will take place from 5 to 12 December 2021 and uses a one -group league format, will see the national team compete with teams from India, China, Korea, Japan and Thailand.

According to the list of 20 players that has been announced today, the average age of players representing Malaysia is around 22 years old with two goalkeepers, seven defenders, five players in the middle position and six players in the attack.

The country’s most experienced player, Juliani Mohamad Din has been appointed to take on the role as the team captain and the experience she has along with several other senior players will definitely be invaluable to help and guide the younger players.

Chairman of the National Team Management Committee, Dato ‘Najmi Razak explained that 12 of the 20 players listed are players who have never made any international appearance and this tournament will be the first tournament for them to win “caps” with the national team.

“The team that will go to Donghae is a long -term project team which is 2026 and this team has also just been formed. For two years the team did not have any matches including international matches or training abroad.

“I am confident and believe that only Malaysia sends the youngest team because other teams send their senior teams due to the Youth (Women’s) World Cup.

“This match will also be used as a platform to provide exposure to the country’s young line-up for them to gain experience playing on the international stage also against the best teams in Asia,” said Dato Najmi Razak who also explained that the tournament will test the mental and physical players for playing. below temperatures to -2 degrees celsius.

Meanwhile, the Head Coach of the National Women’s Special Project Squad, Mohd Nasihin Nubli Ibrahim explained that the selection of the 20 players was based on several criteria including evaluation during the friendly series with the club team that will play in the Malaysian Youth Hockey League TNB Championship (2021). players during the TNB Tun Abdul Razak Cup 2021 Tournament, recently.

“Our assessment is done by taking into account the development in terms of their hockey skills in the match and the positive thing from us allowing them to play in the Tun Abdul Razak Cup is that they get enough time to play competitive matches.

“During the recent Tun Abdul Razak Cup tournament, we saw that there were some players who played quite well and we are still in the process of final scrutiny to call them to join the team.

“The door to join the national team is always open and the players cannot feel uncomfortable and must always improve themselves if they want to stay in the team.

“Regarding this tournament, it is a good platform for us to continue to study the development of the players and provide a very useful experience for them at the international level.

“This tournament will also help to build high confidence in themselves when playing with a team that is ranked higher than us.

“There is no pressure for them but when playing in the tournament they have to give their best and prove why they deserve to be in the national team,” he explained.
