Canada are into the semi-final stage of the FIH Hockey Series Finals 2019, and will play against Italy today at the Bukit Jalil National Hockey Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Ace forward Iain Smythe has reaffirmed his side’s readiness to lock horns with Italy – a team which has caused a major upset in the tournament.

While Canada, have come into the Semi Finals after beating China (3-1) in a shootout in their cross-over match and securing  wins against Austria (2-1) and Belarus (6-2) and  just one loss to Wales (1-3), in their pool stage matches,  the Italian team which are World No. 32, made it to the Semis directly as Pool B toppers after scoring victories against China (2-1), Brazil (3-0) and Malaysia (4-2).

This will be the first time Canada will face Italy, since the 2015 World League Round 2, where Canada won 4-0.

Looking ahead to Canada’s meeting with Italy, the veteran of 189 caps said there are a lot of emotions he is going through currently, but he is determined to get the job done.

 “We are both anxious and excited heading into the semi-finals. But, we know we have the ability to play with confidence and that we are capable of achieving our goal.”

Meanwhile in the second match of the Semi-Final, hosts Malaysia will take on Austria.

The Canadian action begins at 17:45 Hours at the Bukit Jalil Hockey Stadium in Kuala lumpur.
