In Monchengladbach, The Germany women’s hockey team beat Italy 7-0 and, after beating them 2-0 on day one, to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.
A qualification match against Germany (no. 4 in the world) was never going to be easy, but the Italian women still gave their very best.
The Azzurre (no. 17 of the ranking) have never qualified for the Olympic Games (the last time for Italy – men – it can be traced back to Rome 1960) and in 2018 they participated in the World Cup after 42 years of absence.
Germany (No. 4 in the ranking) on the other hand, is one of the recognised powers of women’s hockey: it has won two World Cups (1976, 1981), two Europeans (2007 and 2013) and an Olympiad (2004) and is European silver (2019) and an Olympic bronze in their kitty (2016).
