With just a couple of days remaining for the all-important FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers to be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha on 1st and 2nd November, the Indian Women’s team is all set for the best of two matches showdown against the formidable USA.
This is the first international tournament the Indian Women’s Team will be playing at the Kalinga Stadium and their eagerness and excitement to experience the electrifying atmosphere often created by the hockey-crazy spectators here is palpable.
Speaking about the preparations, Coach Sjoerd Marijne said, “At this stage, it is important to tick all the boxes to make sure we have done everything that we could to be at our best for the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers in Odisha.” Marijne said.
It has been a little more than a year since coach Sjoerd Marijne took charge of the Indian women’s hockey team.
Sjoerd, who was appointed only last year, stated that his focus is only on what they do, and not on what the USA WNT are doing.
“I can’t be busy thinking about USA all the time, what will they do, how fit are they because I then lose track of our own. It’s important to know how they play, their style but we will not change our style,” the Dutch coach said.
“We like attacking hockey I believe very much that you have to use the strong point from the culture you are in. For us it’s about ticking all the boxes. What can do we do, what can we control to be as good as we can,” Sjoerd said.
For the record, India are ranked ninth in the world while USA are four places further down.
The India-USA women’s clash will take place on 1st and 2nd November at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium in India’s Hockey Mecca – Odisha. Tickets for the event can be purchased by clicking here.
