It was a disappointing start to the FIH Series Finals tournament for the Malaysian women’s hockey team as they suffered a narrow 2-1 loss to hosts Ireland.
Goals from Bethany Barr and Katie Mullan helped Ireland secure the victory for Ireland while Siti Husain scored the lone goal for Malaysia.
Coach Dharamraj stated before the tournament that Malaysia’s main challenge will come from Ireland and South Korea.
“We need to finish in the top two to qualify for the playoff matches. Our main challenge will come from highest-ranked Ireland (world No. 8) and world No. 11 South Korea, who are both favourites to reach the final.” he had stated before the match.
The Malaysian women will next take on world. 35 Singapore on Sunday.
