World no. 9 India thumped Fiji (11-0) in a high-scoring match to make it through to the semi-finals of the FIH Series Finals tournament in Hiroshima.
This was a remarkable performance by Coach Sjoerd Marijne‘s team who allowed Fiji to only have one circle entry in the entire 60 minutes, whilst making 74 entries into the opposition’s striking area.
India scored a double brace by Gurjit who struck in the 15th, 19th, 21st and 22nd minutes, while Monika (11th, 33rd)scored a brace for India in a lop-sided Pool A match.
Lalremsiami (4th), Rani (10th), Vandana Katariya (12th), Lilima Minz (51st) and Navneet Kaur (57th) were also among the goal scorers for the winners.
India has won 3 out of 3 matches and scored 20 goals in the pool stage of this tournament.
Analysing her teams performance, Captain Rani Rampal said she is extremely happy to make it to the semi-finals of the tournament.
“It is amazing that we are in the semi-final and our team has really played consistently. Now we are looking forward to the semi-final. Whoever we are playing we will stay focused on ourselves and we need to give the best to be in the final. And especially today we have so much respect for Fiji who fought as much as they could. “
India will play their semifinal encounter on Saturday.
