The Indian women’s hockey team Saturday secured a place in the final round of Tokyo Olympic qualifiers after beating lower-ranked Chile 4-2 in the semifinals of FIH Series Finals.
India rode on goals through Gurjit Kaur (22nd), Navneet Kaur (31st 37th) and Rani Rampal (57th).
Carolina Garcia (18th) & Manuela Urroz (43rd) scored for Chile.
India team captain Rani said she was happy with the win.
“It was a really good game from both sides. One of our players lost her father yesterday. This match is dedicated to her father so he can stay in peace in heaven.”
Chile assistant coach Sergio Vigil congratulated the Indian team on playing well.
“Both teams played a very good match, congratulations to India who qualify for the final. Chile played [well] every time and we have created a lot of opportunities. However India played well in every detail.”
In the final on Sunday, India will play against hosts Japan.
The top two teams from this tournament qualify for the final round of 2020 Olympics qualifiers to be held later this year.
