Favourites Japan beat Russia (3-1) in a thrilling shootout after being locked (1-1) in regulation time at the FIH Series Finals tournament in Hiroshima.
This was an upset for Russia who have been brilliant earlier in this event by finishing first in Pool.
Both teams had excellent chances to win the contest in the third and fourth periods, but in the end it would take a shoot-out to settle the contest.
However, Japans goalkeeper Megumi Kageyama helped her team win the match 3-1 by making three saves to win the match.
Russia Assistant coach Moses Lodarmasse congratulated Japan on their performance.
“It was a tough game, and I must say big compliments to Japan because they have played well, they haven’t played that well until today. We had our chance, it was a tight game.”
Japan head coach Anthony Farry said it was an exciting match.
“We played really well again, we’ve had over 40 circle penetrations that’s really exciting for us. Credits to Russia, they did a fantastic job of obtaining the contest and making sure we didn’t get easy shots, a really good job to them.”
In the final on Sunday, Japan will play India, while Russia will take on Chile for the 3rd/4th placement match.
