Dragflick Newsdesk : The first edition of the National 5’s Hockey Championship which will take place on 2 to 6 March 2022 and based at the Bukit Jalil National Hockey Stadium, has successfully received participation from 13 state teams.

For this inaugural edition, the 5’s and High Performance Hockey Committee has set the age limit for players eligible to be registered to be 23 years and below and after the entry confirmation date ends, only the Johor State Team does not submit a confirmation form to participate in the tournament.

The Chairman of the 5’s Hockey and High Performance Committee, Mr. Hasnizam Hassan, explained that the number of entries received was very encouraging and hoped that this tournament would be a platform for players who were less outstanding before to prove their abilities.

“The 5’s Hockey and High Performance Committee has set a target to receive entries from 14 state teams however after the closing date for entries, we received entries from 13 state teams and it is very encouraging.

“In the meeting that took place last Saturday, we have decided that the tournament will use a two -group format with the top two teams in each group going to the semi -finals and then to the finals.

“Each match will last for 20 minutes, that is, the team will play 10 minutes for the first half and a break of two minutes then another 10 minutes for the second half.

“We really hope that with the organization of the National 5’s Hockey Championship which runs simultaneously with the TNB Malaysia Hockey League (TNB MHL) 2022 Championship, each state can dig out new talents to play in this tournament.

“It will also show that state teams are not just dependent on players who have made a name for themselves or are existing and we hope this tournament will help state teams to highlight new players.

“Maybe before this, there were players who dropped out a little and received less attention, so with the organization of the National 5’s Hockey Championship, it will be a platform for those players to stand out and may represent Malaysia one day.

“We also hope that the organization of this tournament will also be a new culture in the development of hockey and can be intensified at the grassroots level,” he said. the tournament itself as well as the teams in action.
