Germany have long been a global hockey powerhouse, and their bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games provided a timely reminder of that fact. A second-place finish at the Hockey World League Semi-Final event in Johannesburg was more than enough to secure berths at the Odisha Hockey World League Final 2017 and the Odisha Hockey World Cup 2018, a feat the team achieved without the remarkable talents of Olympic gold medallists Tobias Hauke, Florian Fuchs and Martin Häner, who all return for this event.
Classy midfielder Mats Grambusch and attacking star Christopher Rühr have also been named in the squad selected by Head Coach Stefan Kermas, who has also given tournament debuts to prospects Johannes Große and Phillipp Huber. A fourth-place finish at August’s Rabo EuroHockey Championships in Amsterdam was something of an anti-climax, but the team are expected to be back to their best in Bhubaneswar.
