The Indian men’s hockey team eked out a 2-0 win over World Champions Belgium in the first game of the three-match series of their Belgium Tour at the Sportcentrum Wilrijkse Plein in Belgium.
India kept up the pressure on Belgium’s defence and opened the game through Mandeep Singh’s strike. Akashdeep Singh was the other scorer for India.
The last time India beat Belgium in ‘regulation time’ was in 2018 at the Four Nations Tournament in New Zealand.
India and Belgium last met at the 2018 World Cup in India, where the teams played out a 2-2 draw. Infact, in the last three meetings, India and Belgium have played out a draw.
The good results would boost the team’s confidence ahead of the important at the FIH Olympic Qualifiers later in November 2019.
However, before we get overly excited, it is important to mention that the Indian team were not pitched against a full strength Belgium team. The Belgium team had atleast 11 players playing either their debut cap or second cap.
