Erasmus Pieterse, fondly known as “Rassie” is set to compete in his third World Cup after being named in the South African squad for the Hockey World Cup 2018 event in India.
Rassie, 35, has gone on to represent South Africa 137 times. and has appeared in both the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games as well as the London 2012 Olympics Games. Moreover, he has played in two Hockey World Cups for South Africa as well as in two Commonwealth Games.
Growing up, Rassie played a lot of different sports, but rugby was his favourite. After some serious injuries, he had to stop playing rugby. While at university, one of his good friend who was a hockey player. convinced Rassie to join the club and it all started there for him in 2002. The Rest, as we know is history.
Coached by Englishman Mark Hopkins, South Africa won the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt last year, which secured their place in the World Cup 2018.
South Africa will contest in the opening match of the showcase tournament against India on 28th November 2018. They will head to the tournament for the 6th time looking to outdo their previous best of 10th place, achieved in both 2010 and 1994.
