The Argentine men’s hockey team added their third consecutive gold on Saturday at the Pan American Games after beating Canada (5-2) in the final gold match.

By virtue of this win, Argentina have qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where they will seek to revalidate the gold they won at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics .

The Men’s team triumph came in a day after the women’s team were crowned as Pan Am champions in the women’s category.

This was Argentina’s third straight win against Canada. They had previously defeated Canada at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara 2011 and in Toronto in 2015.

This was the tenth Pan American title in men’s field hockey , after those achieved in Winnipeg 1967, Cali 1971, Mexico City 1975, San Juan de Puerto Rico 1979, Havana 1991, Mar del Plata 1995, Santo Domingo 2003, Guadalajara 2011 and Toronto 2015.

This victory was an all important win for Argentina, whose performance at the 2018 World Cup was below expectations, having finished in the seventh place.

It is important to note that this tournament did not see their ace drag-flicker Gonzalo Peillat participate at the event. Earlier this January, few days prior to the FIH Pro League 2019, a conflict broke out with Gonzalo Peillat, deciding to step aside from the team after a Three Nations tournament in Chile.

It’s important that Argentina now maintains the status that this team enjoyed in the last three years, and defends the gold of 2016 in Tokyo in 2020.

For now, the main goal of 2019 is accomplished.
