A sell-out crowd filled the National Stadium in Lima on Friday night for the opening ceremony of the 2019 Pan American Games.

“Amazing Peru” was the theme for the welcome party for the athletes of the Americas.

The star of the show was Puerto Rico singer Luis Fonsi who is known for his hit “Despacito”.

Also on stage was Vania Masías, Diego Flórez, Lucho Quequezana and more than 1700 Peruvian artists.

About 50 thousand spectators watched the show and witnessed the parade of the more than 6700 athletes from 41 countries.

The show featured dance, acrobatics and live musicians.

Directed by Francisco Negrin, the ceremony showed modern-day Lima with ancient Peru.

The event was produced by Balich Worldwide, a Milan company which has produced several Olympic ceremonies in its portfolio. Balich will also produce the August 11 closing ceremony.
