Despite not completing his contract expiring next month but Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) Technical Director, Terry Walsh and MHC will continue to collaborate indirectly in helping national hockey sports in terms of development.
This was stated in a press conference held at the MHC Office, Bukit Jalil National Hockey Stadium this morning. Appointed as Technical Director in 2015, Terry’s services with MHC will officially end this March 31st.
MHC President, Dato ‘Sri Subahan Kamal, however, explained that the technical director’s role from Australia is still needed by MHC who will play the Olympic qualifiers starting 26 April.
Subahan said, “After discussing with the National Sports Council (MSN) yesterday, I think we still need him (Terry) especially in hockey development and advisory services to his own MHC.
“Terry decided to return to Perth. But we will continue to maintain ties. The Olympic qualification will begin in April. Roelant (Oltmans) and Terry have also worked together before, as did Stephen (Van Huizen). If Malaysia were to qualify for the Olympics, it would have been a joy for all because we worked together as a team for so long, “said Subahan.
“Even after March he is no longer a Technical Director, but this month many more things will be done by Terry such as presenting a development work papers to the ministry, helping the tournament to be held in the country as well as the Olympic qualification in April.
“After that, we may also be part-time collaborators with Terry from Perth to Malaysia, it has been notified to Dato ‘Ahmad Shapawi Ismail (MSN Director General) and received a positive response,” added Subahan.
In the meantime, Terry said he was excited to return to Malaysia and served as Technical Director after having run the national team in 1990-1993.
Terry said, “This is my decision after more than three years as a Technical Director of MHC. As long as being here, I am very comfortable working with great individuals here and some positive changes in the game are also visible. I believe the great potential of the national team and can be one of the world’s biggest hockey powers.
“I take this opportunity to thank MHC President, Dato Sri Subahan for his continued support and all the MHC staff who are so positive during my three years of service,” he said.
“Of course, in the sports world, the rise of a team in line with the coaching line that leads them, advises and strives to make them better players.
“I would like to thank the players for their commitment as well as the dedicated coaching staff involved in all the MHC programs. I also praised Stephen, the head of the former men’s team, for his important and brilliant role in team improvement, “added Terry.
Terry also believes in the credibility of the national team. He said, “I am convinced that after 20 years of waiting, the national male hockey team will qualify for the Tokyo Olympics next year and hope it will be a catalyst for future generations to participate in this sport. Malaysia should continue to be strong at the Asian level, “he said.
Terry also thanked MSN and the National Sports Institute (ISN) for his support and trust throughout his tenure as Technical Director of MHC.
