While everyone is criticising the Malaysian National Hockey Teams performance at the World Cup for their incompetent performance in Bhubaneswar, MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal, is adamant that there is nothing wrong with the team or the players.
“There is no need to press the panic button. When the groupings were released, we already knew that it is going to be tough for us to beat teams like Holland and Germany. We were unlucky to draw 1-1 with Pakistan.
“That’s why national coach Roelant Oltmans kept saying we are in a group of death,” said Subahan.
“I don’t know why people are worried as I am not worried, I am confident that we will play good hockey and qualify for the 2020 Olympics. Just give national coach Roelant (Oltmans) more time as he was only hired on Oct 1.
“Its easy for some people to comment on the team’s poor form but as far as I can remember the same people who are critical of the team have never won any major international medals. They too have failed many times during their playing days.
“So forget about the World Cup and give the players the support they need for their assignment next year.
“And I have said many times, if we don’t qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, I will take full responsibility and resign,” said Subahan.
“It is not the end of the world but it is a wake-up call for the players,” said Subahan.
“I believe that the World Cup champions will come from our group as the Dutch and Germans are really in top form in the tournament.
“I have spoken to Oltmans and we plan to send the team to play in Europe next year before the April Olympic qualifier (at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil from April 23 to May 1).
“We prefer to play matches against Germany and Holland next year in preparation for the Olympics qualifier as both these teams could be our opponents in the second round of the Olympic qualifier in November next year,” said Subahan.
