After totaling four points in the Spartans’ home-opening win over Ball State on Sunday, freshman midfielder Ellie Rutherford of the Michigan State field hockey team was named Big Ten Freshman of Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
The Edinburgh, Scotland native tallied a goal and two assists in MSU’s 7-1 rout of Ball State, one of three Spartan players to record three-or-more points in the contest.
Rutherford played a crucial role on the game’s opening goal, feeding senior Cara Bonshak in the third minute. The rookie then scored herself in the 14th minute off a Hannah Jarvie pass, and later assisted on graduate student Maddie Babineau’s tally in the 21st minute of action.
The four-point performance by Rutherford improved her season total to six points, previously scoring her first collegiate goal in the Green and White’s 4-0 win against Saint Louis on Aug. 28.
She becomes the first Michigan State rookie to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors since current senior Isa van der Weij did so on Aug. 27, 2018.
Rutherford and the Spartans open Big Ten play this week, hosting Ohio State Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
