Nicole Erasmus, who became a fourth generation Olympian at the Tokyo Olympics, has announced her retirement from International Hockey. Erasmus, who had made herself unavailable for selection before IPT, retires with 52 caps to her name, having reached her 50 at the Tokyo Olympics.

Erasmus was part of the South African U21 side at the Junior World Cup in Germany in 2013 and would make an impact netting four goals as the South Africans finished 8th. Along with a number of her teammates from that tournament, Nicole would go on to represent the senior national side.

She made her debut against Chile in a 4-2 victory at Hartleyvale Stadium. She would go on and score her first and second international goals in the African Hockey Championships in 2015 against Namibia, before adding a third against Zimbabwe. She ends her career with five goals and as an Olympic goal scorer having netted against Great Britain in her 50th test at Tokyo.

Her career spans several major competitions with FIH World League Semi-Final, Commonwealth Games, FIH World Cup and the Olympic Games all on a glittering hockey CV.

Remarkably at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics became the fourth Olympian from her family. All four represented different sports making it more remarkable!

  • Lynne Tasker 1980 Moscow Olympics – swimming
  • Anthony Tasker 1964 Tokyo Olympics – rowing
  • Frank Rushton 1936 Berlin Olympics – hurdles

“It’s been a wonderful honour to represent my country on the global stage. To stand with my teammates and sing the national anthem is a privilege that I will forever be grateful for. As I begin the next phase of my life and develop my career, it is the right time for me to move aside. The talent coming through leaves South African Hockey in a good space, and I am excited to watch from the stands supporting my country. Thank you to all my family and friends who have supported my journey!” shared Erasmus.

SA Hockey CEO Marissa Langeni
