The New Zealand women’s hockey team lived up to their billing in the women’s hockey competition here at the Oceania Cup 2019 tournament to secure a spot at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The New Zealand women played out a draw with Australia 1-1 to take gold at the Kalka Shades Hockey Field in Rockhampton in Australia

A late strike by Olivia Merry helped the Kiwi women to over-power the Australians.

Mariah Williams was the lone scorer for Australia.

On Day One and Two, New Zealand registered one win and one loss against Australia and needed only a draw to win the tournament.

The New Zealand women’s hockey team will now compete at the Toyko 2020, joining Argentina who qualified through the Pan American Games 2019, South Africa who qualified through the African Continentals 2019 ( participation uncertain) and Japan who qualified through the Asian Games 2018, alongside 10 other teams that are yet to be decided.
