The association of Pakistan customs with country’s national game goes back a very long time- even before the independence.
The list of hockey stalwarts who played for customs is not only awesome but also mesmerizing.
If Hasan Sardar is the greatest centre forward, Tanvir Dar is the most fearsome penalty corner striker to wear the green shirt.
If the first World Cup was lifted by captain Khalid Mahmood, the second time when Pakistan won, in 1978, the World Cup was hoisted by Islahuddin.
The sobriquets earned by the customs’ hockey players are now part of country’s sporting folklore.
Rock of Gibraltar’ –Anwaar Ahmad Khan, ‘Flying Horse’-Samiullah, ‘The Wizard’-Hassan Sardar.
In the year 2000, an internationally renowned sports journalist compiled Pakistan’s hockey team of the millennium.
The domestic team with the highest representation in this all-time XI of Pakistan was none other than customs- five were selected.
Pakistan hockey team’s preparation for the 2018 World Cup are in the final stages Of the four member team management , three belong to customs: Hasan Sardar (Manager),Tauqeer Dar (Head Coach) and Danish Kaleem (Coach).
Hence, it was befitting that customs officers arranged a reception in the honour of the World Cup bound Pakistan team at a local hotel.
The customs officers expressed hope that the boys would put up a good show in India and rekindle nation’s interest in hockey.
Team’s captain M.Rizwan Sr thanked them, “such gestures serve as a morale boaster for the players.
We are especially thankful to Tauqeer Dar sahib who has played the major role in arranging almost all these functions.
The team now has a feeling that they are going to India with the full backing of the nation”.
