Just two weeks ago, Holland’s ambassador to Pakistan, Wouter Plomp had taken to ‘twitter’ to express his excitement for the upcoming “Netherlands vs Pakistan” FIH Men’s Olympic Qualifier Match that is scheduled to take place later in October in Amsterdam.
But, little did we know that his excitement and support for the Pakistani Men’s Hockey team would extend beyond his twitter account.
Wouter wasted no time and fixed an appointed with Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF)’s President Khalid Sajjad Khokhar at his office in Islamabad to discuss all things hockey.
On meeting the PHF President, His Excellence Wouter Plomp, not only shared his passion for the game, but also discussed hockey relations between both the countries.
Plomp was very forthcoming and expressed his interest in making the Netherlands and Pakistan’s hockey relations stronger.
Plomp also showed interest and spoke of the possibility of making arrangements for the Dutch men’s hockey team to visit Pakistan for a series of friendly matches.
It’s not the first time, the Netherlands has shown interest in the development of Pakistan.
Pakistan and the Netherlands established bilateral relations soon after the independence of Pakistan. The Dutch Embassy opened in Karachi in 1955 and shifted to Islamabad ten years later.
Pakistan soon became a partner country for the Netherlands, receiving substantial Development Cooperation funds from the 1960’s onwards, particularly in the areas of water management/environment, education and governance.
The Netherlands and Pakistan are both passionate countries about hockey, so this meeting hopefully will bring some “change” to Pakistan’s hockey scene.
