The Polish women’s national team finished third at the European Championships in Scottish Glasgow.

The Polish women started the tournament sensationally defeating the Turks by 6: 0. In the second duel it was also very good – after an emotional match, the white and red drew  with the favorites of the Italian tournament.

In the last – decisive final clash in the group stage they shared points with the Welsh women and took second place in the group.

In 1/2 tournament they faced the hosts – The Scotland national team. Unfortunately, the host beat them 3-0.

In the match for the 3rd place, the Polish women defeated the Austrians 4: 2 and won the bronze medals at the European Championships.

Polish team coach Maciej Wrzesiński commented’

“I knew it was going to be a difficult match. Austria was developing at this tournament. In addition, our opponents prepared for this meeting and you could see that they wanted to turn off our strengths. Fortunately we were better. It is a pity that we did not use permanent fragments of the game, because in the first part of the meeting we could have had a calm result, and we fought to the end until the end.”

Unfortunately, the place on the podium did not give the white-and-red promotion to the elite group of the eight best teams of the Old Continent. However, the team coach was happy with the results they achieved in Glasgow.

“I have good feelings after this tournament. Compared to the FIH Series Finals – the second stage of the Olympic qualification, took place a few weeks ago – seven new players went to Scotland. I didn’t really know what to expect, but hockey players quickly proved to me that I was unnecessarily afraid. Young players blended in well with the team. In addition, the team had a nice atmosphere. All these factors decided about this bronze medal. It is a pity that there is no promotion, but this tournament came to us. I am happy above all with the game. The teams that won the promotion – Scottish and Italians – outranked us with routine. As for skills, they were similar, but it was experience that decided about the promotion – explains the Polish national team selector.”

It is worth noting that the prize for the best player of the tournament was won by the captain of the Polish national team Marlena Rybach , and the title of the best striker.
