The New Zealand men’s hockey team suffered a heartbreak in the final match of the “Ready Steady Tokyo” Olympic Test event in Tokyo, Japan after losing to India (0-5) in a keenly contested summit clash to settle for the silver medal.

The New Zealand team had edged out India (2-1) earlier in the robin round league stage match and were the only team to stay unbeaten in the league stage.

The loss although will not hurt the Kiwis badly as a gold here would have ‘not’ guaranteed any direct qualification in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Coming into the match, the Kiwis were strong contenders to win the title as they were the only team who spent six months playing against top ranked teams at the FIH Pro League 2019.

The Vantage Black Sticks will fly back to New Zealand to prepare for the Oceania Cup in Rockhampton, Australia which will be held next month.  A win there means, they’ll be able to seal their ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
