The Indian men’s hockey team wrapped up its Olympic Test event campaign with another gold medal on Wednesday, beating New Zealand 5-0.
This was a real heartbreak for the New Zealand men’s hockey team who have been spectacular throughout the tournament and were the only team to remain unbeaten in the robin round league stages.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh (7th minute) opened the scoreboard before Shamsher Singh (18th minute), Nilakanta Sharma (22nd minute), Gursahibjit Singh (26th minute) and Mandeep Singh (27th minute) scored for India at the Oi Hockey Stadium here.
“I feel we played very well. Glad we were able score our opportunities at the start of the game,” Harmanpreet said after the win.
“We expected the final to be tough, since we lost to New Zealand earlier. But we sat together and worked on our mistakes to win today,” he added.
It is worthy to note that the Indian team had newer faces in the squad and was without the services of their ace goalkeeper P.R Sreejesh.
India recorded two wins and only one loss against New Zealand (1-2 to) earlier in the round robin league-stage.
The result is all that matters in the world of sports. So to finish on the top and win a gold with the Tokyo Olympics only one year away, is absolutely great.
