The hockey-mad pockets of the otherwise badminton-crazy country are all ready and decked up, for what has been described as one of the most ‘prestigious hockey tournaments in the world.’
Malaysia, a country with substantial support for Hockey, will see 6 teams compete over the next 7 days for a place in the final at the Sultan Azlan Shah Stadium in Ipoh, starting March 23rd.
The Sultan Azlan Shah tournament, which has been held since 1983, and annually since 2003, is named after the ninth King of Malaysia, Sultan Azlan Shah, a keen follower of hockey.
“The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup has, is and will always be among the most prestigious tournaments in the world! Every year the support for the tournament increases,” expressed Malaysia’s Deputy President Dr. Shamala Subramaniam through Facebook.
“This year we have received RM 2 million in support of the tournament and this evidently serves as a testimony of the ever so increasing support.” she stated.
Even as the Malaysia Hockey team is leaving no stone unturned in their preparations to put up their best performance in front of the home audience, the host nation along with the Malaysia Hockey Federation, are working tirelessly to ensure spectators and teams from around the globe have the best experience of the event.
Action begins on March 23rd, with India taking on Japan, Canada taking on Korea and the host nation opening their campaign against Poland.
