A month has passed since winning the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. And since that August 6, the recognitions did not stop for Agustina Gorzelany.
It happens that the defender of the Lionesses is one of the six nominees to receive the award for the best player in the world of the 2020-2021 season and shares the vote together with her compatriot Agustina Albertarrio, the Indian Gurjit Kaur and the Dutch Eva de Goede, Frédérique Matla and Maria Verschoor.
From Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain) where she defends the colors of the Unión Deportiva Taburiente, Gorzelany told how she received the news of the nomination:
“I found out totally unprepared. I was at home and suddenly messages began to arrive congratulating me on the nomination and I did not understand anything. Then I saw the news on social networks and I was totally surprised.”
Born in the San Martín club, Gorze became a key piece of the team, not only from its position in defense but also as a fundamental weapon in the short corner, with its specialty, the dragged. In Tokyo she scored four goals that way, being the top scorer for the national team. Regarding what it means to be part of the nomination, she assured:
“This recognition is really incredible. One in the maelstrom of the day to day out there does not fall so much, but once it relaxes and falls to the ground of what we achieved in the Olympic Games and now with this recognition, for me it is crazy and I’m really very happy and grateful. ”
Her debut for the senior team came on February 13, 2017 in a series of Test Matches against New Zealand. It was just two months after having been consecrated world champion with the Leoncitas in Santiago de Chile, in 2016.
Precisely in that final, she was also the protagonist by scoring the goal that would seal the victory against the Netherlands. Today, she has already played 63 games with the Leonas jersey and 21 goals scored.
When asked about the importance of having female players in the international spotlight, she stated:
“It is a pride that there are so many Argentines who are nominated. This means that we are doing things well as players and it is always nice to see the Argentine flag up there.”
