The organization of two domestic tournaments as announced by the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) through the previous Competition Committee, namely the Tun Abdul Razak Cup 2021 and TNB Malaysian Junior Hockey League (TNB MJHL) 2021, will be held according to the schedule.

The two domestic tournaments will be held at the Bukit Jalil National Hockey Stadium where the Tun Abdul Razak Cup 2021 Tournament will be held on 10 November to 20 November 2021 while the TNB MJHL 2021 Tournament will be held on 26 November 2021 to 2 January 2022.

However, there are some changes for the organization of TNB MJHL 2021 where the tournament will be held for the men’s category only and saw no organization for the women’s category but the MHC Competition Committee has plans to organize the women’s category in early 2022 and it will be decided again.

The matter was shared through a press conference held online today and it was chaired by the Chairman of the MHC Competition Committee, Dato ‘Sri Dr. Anil Jeet Singh

Both tournaments will be held in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) set by the National Security Council (MKN), Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) besides taking into account each guideline given to ensure the tournament is held safely.

As for the tournament format, MHC maintains the format used in the previous edition where for the Tun Abdul Razak Cup 2021 Tournament, the men’s and women’s categories will be competed in one division only.

Four groups will be divided according to the number of entries for the men’s category and three groups for the women’s category also according to the number of teams competing and KHM will start sending “calling entries” to each state on 17 September 2021.

Meanwhile, for the TNB MJHL 2021 Championship, the format has used in previous editions i.e. the split of two divisions will be maintained with division one will be competed in a one -round league involving 10 teams.

For division two, groups will be broken down according to the entries received by MHC and all teams wishing to participate in the TNB MJHL 2021 Championship have until September 21 to submit entry forms.

According to the Chairman of the MHC Competition Committee, Dato ‘Sri Dr. Anil Jeet Singh, TNB MJHL 2021 Championship will involve players aged 21 and under but the age for goalkeepers is set at 19 years and under.

“The main goal of organizing TNB MJHL is to find young talents who can be highlighted to represent the national team. The rationale for why there is an age limit difference for goalkeepers and players is that we want to find young goalkeepers who can still be absorbed in the national team.

“It is also Malaysia’s preparation to host the 2023 Junior Hockey World Cup. Therefore, we set the goalkeeper to be under 19 years old,” he explained.

For the record, following the outbreak of the Covid-19 Pandemic, last year’s TNB MJHL Championship was canceled.

Meanwhile, the Tun Abdul Razak Cup 2020 was held successfully without causing any Covid-19 infection among players and officials or causing the existence of any cluster involved in the tournament.
