USA Field Hockey is pleased to announce that Gus Soteriades, USA Field Hockey and International Hockey Federation (FIH) International Elite Panel Umpire, will present at the 2019 USA Field Hockey, presented by AstroTurf.

The topic Soteriades will cover is “Umpires: Giving and Receiving Feedback”Summit will be held March 15-17 at the Lord Baltimore Hotel in Baltimore and will welcome administrators, coaches, umpires and sponsors for a weekend of education, networking, collaboration and fun.

Soteriades is a respected field hockey umpire, having officiated at the top level for about 20 years. He has made a major impact on the umpiring and field hockey communities throughout his career.

He made his international debut at the 1999 Pan American Club Championships and has gone on to umpire around the world in major domestic and international (indoor and outdoor) tournaments.

Soteriades currently serves on the Pan American Umpiring Committee as the secretary and is working on developing a mentoring program with a team of his international colleagues. He was a former member of the FIH Communications and Information Technology (IT) Committee.

He has umpired at numerous Olympic Qualifiers throughout the world, South American Championship (2014, 2016), European Indoor Championships (2015), Inter-Nations Series (2011), EuroHockey Junior Nations Trophy (2011), Indoor World Cup (2007, 2011, missing 2015 due to injury).

Asian Games (2006, 2018), Indoor Pan American Cup (2005, 2010, 2014, 2017), Junior World Cup (2005), Pan American Cup (200, 2004, 2009, 2017), Central American Caribbean Games (2002, 2018), Pan American Games (2003, 2007, 2011, 2019) and many more.

Soteriades had led coursework, presentations and worked in training umpires in North, Central and South American as well as the Caribbean. In the United States, he became the first male to officiate the NCAA Final Four in 2004.

Soteriades grew up in Ohio in a legendary field hockey family. His mother, Marge Redmond learned the game under NFHCA Hall of Fame member Catherine Brown, and coached at the high school level at Upper Arlington HS, and collegiately at Ohio Wesleyan University for many years, and his three sisters also spent time in the coaching ranks with two still active.

When not umpiring, Soteriades is a sought-after Strategy and Management Consultant that has spent time in multiple industries specializing in communication and organizing chaos.
