With the below announcement, USA Field Hockey is pleased to announce that the U.S. U-22 Men’s National Team will attend the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup Bhubaneswar 2021 in India.

“We are obviously thrilled at the opportunity to compete at the Junior World Cup!,” said Pat Harris, U-22 USMNT Head Coach. “I am extremely proud of the group’s performances at the Junior Pan American Championship that ultimately lead to this invitation. There is a lot of work to be done from now until the start of the tournament, but we are up for the challenge!”

This is only the third time in history that the USA men’s program will compete in the Junior World Cup, which has been held since 1979. The squad was part of the 1989 edition, where they placed 11th, and the 2009 event, where they finished 20th.

Following last week’s announcement by Hockey Australia and Hockey New Zealand that they will no longer be able to participate to the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup Bhubaneswar 2021 due to COVID-related international travel restrictions put in place by their respective governments, both teams have been replaced by the USA and Canada.

Since the qualification process for the event stipulates that the Pan American Hockey Federation has the quota of the first reserve, the USA – who finished third of the recent Junior Pan American Championships – have been selected. The second reserve spot was attributed to the best team in the FIH World Rankings (Seniors) not yet qualified, namely Canada.

As announced by Hockey India earlier today, the event (November 24 – December 5) will take place in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, the outstanding venue which will also host the next FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup in 2023.

The match schedule, involving16 teams, will be communicated at a later stage.
