Wales Women Head Coach Kevin Johnson has named his team for the FIH World Cup Qualifiers in Pisa, Italy.

The 19-player squad fly out to Pisa on Tuesday to kick off their World Cup Qualifier campaign against 7 other European teams.

The tournament, held from 21st to 24th October, will be played under a knock-out format – only one nation will qualify for the 2022 FIH World Cup which will take place in Spain and the Netherlands. The eight teams competing are:

  • Ireland – ranked 12th
  • Italy – ranked 17th
  • Scotland – Ranked 19th
  • Russia – ranked 29th
  • Belarus – ranked 21st
  • Poland – ranked 23rd
  • Wales – ranked 25th
  • France – ranked 27th

Wales’ first match is against Italy on October 21st at 17:30 BST. This will be streamed live on eurohockeytv.org.

With a tough challenge ahead of them, the Wales squad will be pleased to welcome back the experience of Olympians Sarah Jones and Leah Wilkinson. Injuries mean the line-up is missing a few familiar faces, and some younger players are stepping up to receive their first senior cap.

“Ahead of the qualifiers, it has been great to welcome back the experience of both Sarah Jones and Leah Wilkinson after their recent medal success with Great Britain, but sadly we are unable to call upon both Hannah Cozens and Eloise Laity due to injury.”

“It is also pleasing to see Emily Drysdale in line to receive her first senior cap in the opening game against Italy after demonstrating good progress in recent months. This is rewarding for a young player who has been in and around our training squad working hard on her development since performing well for the U21 team in 2019.”

“Whilst we know these qualifiers will be a stiff test for us based on our tournament ranking, we always enjoy these challenges and have proved on numerous occasions that on our day we can cause a big upset. We are very well prepared to take on the hosts, Italy, in their own back yard and give them plenty to think about in front of what we hope will be a big home crowd.” Kevin Johnson – Head Coach
